This is an exquisite piece of history! This one of a kind Butlers biscuit caddy boasts the motto “Comme Je Trouve” with a family crest of a dragon figure on the lid of the barrel. This French (Norman) phrase “comme je trouve” is the heraldic motto of the Butlers, the Anglo-Norman Earls (and Dukes) of Ormonde, Kilkenny, Ireland. This translates to English “as I find” roughly meaning “I take things as I find them” or, by extension, I will conquer one thing at a time. The Ormonde Butlers descended from Theobald FitzWalter, who accompanied Strongbow (Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare) in the Norman conquest of Ireland in 1169. The Butler surname (from “le botellier” – “the keeper of the bottle”) was taken early in the 13th Century from the title “Chief Butler of Ireland” which was originally bestowed upon Theobald FitzWalter by King Henry II of England in 1177. This amazing piece features beautiful engraved details on the barrel. The hinged lid has its own unique work and is topped with a cherub finial. The barrel has a handle that can be moved to the side and has lovely scrolled hinge work. On either side of the tray are two beautiful glass bowls that can be removed for easy cleaning. The bottom is held up by four claw feet that have their own beautiful scrollwork. There are no visible stamps or hallmarks on this piece, but it is in excellent condition and would be a stunning addition to any fine table.
