Victorian Silver Cut Glass 3 Bottle Liquor Decanter Holder Tantalus Triple Stand. This is a lovely attractive antique Victorian silver plated tantalus with three AWESOME ORIGINAL Blown & cut glass decanters with their ORIGINAL stoppers, circa 1860’s in date. The three cut glass decanters are unusual in shape and style! They feature superb facet cut linear decoration with faceted cut stoppers. They are all HAND BLOWN & then the ENTIRE SURFACE of them are CUT or ground with CUT PATTERNS then CUT ETCHED or CARVED into them!!! The silver plated decanter holder is decorated as well & has a central stem with a loop handle and the three decanters sit in circular wells. The Better types of tantalus holds three bottles {or VERY RARELY even more} or decanters while there were also smaller types housing only two. There are many different forms of tantalus. Often the encasement has metal handles on both sides and ornately carved decor. Crystal and metal versions are also a beautiful option when choosing a tantalus. The Tantalus derived its name from the story of the mythological Greek king, Tantalus. To be tantalized is to be tempted with the unattainable, and the king, condemned to an eternity in Hades, was sorely tested. He was forced to stand forever in chin deep water that, when he went to drink, it would recede and to gaze upon foods he could only reach for and never grasp. The 1800’s saw our Victorian predecessors apply the King’s tableware & accouterments of the day such as the decanter castors (Tantalus). Don’t miss out. Size It is 11″ tall and 8″ wide.
